Biochemistry is the application of chemistry to the study of biological processes at the cellular and molecular level. It emerged as a distinct discipline around the beginning of the 20th century when scientists combined chemistry, physiology, and biology to investigate the chemistry of living systems.
With the blessings of God the Almighty, The Department of Biochemistry at Idhaya College, Puducherry started in 2005 with 14 students and 2 staff members. The student strength has been increased from 30 to 50 in the academic year 2015.
It has remained in the forefront of biochemical teaching and research in and around of Puducherry and Tamilnadu. It has deservedly received recognition at various stages of its growth.
Over 18 years, the department has grown in size and facilities to suit the changing trends.
To achieve its goals, the department has received continuous support from the management, parents, students and stakeholders.
The sole purpose to teach biochemistry is to impart scientific knowledge to woman for their good health and well being in this society.
To achieve academic excellence in biochemistry of imparting in-depth knowledge in the latest tools and technologies to the students, facilitating research activities and cater to the ever changing industrial demand & societal needs.

The biochemistry laboratory is fully equipped with the modern apparatus like UV Spectrophotometer, High speed centrifuge, Laminar Air flow chamber, double distillation unit, binocular microscope, cell and colony counter, UV transilluminator, electrophoresis unit and physiology equipments to fulfill the practical skill of the students .
The Biochemistry department association is “Genesis” meaning new beginning. Every year the association is inaugurated by a chief guest. Student Secretary and joint secretary were elected by our department student to lead the association towards the innovative path. Through this association the department organizes various curricular, co-curricular activities to mould the students to face challenges in the fast growing scenario.
Many of the alumni have occupied responsible positions in India and abroad and have won acclaim for their contributions to the advancement of biochemistry.

The Department of Biochemistry, Idhaya College of Arts and Science for Women, organized Speech and Poster Presentation Competitions on 11th November 2025 at Vallalar Government Girls Higher Secondary School in observance of National Education Day. The event, held at 10:00 a.m., focused on the theme “The Role of Science in Everyday Life.”
Students actively participated and presented their ideas through speeches and posters. All winners were appreciated with prizes, and all participants were encouraged with gifts. The programme was conducted smoothly and effectively promoted scientific awareness among students.

The Department of Biochemistry, organized the World Science Day for Peace and Development on 10th November 2025. The event aimed to promote scientific awareness, encourage creativity among students, and highlight the role of science in shaping a sustainable future.
The theme for the year was “Exploring Science, Shaping the Future.”

The Department of Biochemistry, Idhaya College, Pakkamudayanpet, Puducherry, successfully organized an Orientation Program titled “CUET Examination & Higher Education Opportunities” on 30th January 2026 at the AV Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
The session was led by the esteemed resource person Mr. M. Gandhi Pragash, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Indira Gandhi College of Arts and Science, Puducherry. He provided valuable insights into the CUET examination structure, preparation strategies, and the wide range of higher education opportunities available to students. His talk motivated students to aim higher and prepare strategically for their future academic pursuits.

The Department of Biochemistry, under the Genesis Association, Idhaya College of Arts and Science for Women, Puducherry, successfully organized a National Level Seminar on “Exploring the Molecular World: New Perspectives in Biochemistry” on February 20, 2026, at the Idhaya Auditorium, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The event witnessed around 300 enthusiastic participation from undergraduate and postgraduate students and faculty members from various colleges.

As part of the IIC Celebration activities, the Department of Biochemistry observed National Pollution Control Day on 02.12.2025. The programme highlighted the importance of environmental protection and encouraged students to adopt sustainable practices. A debate competition on the topic “Environmental Protection vs Industrial Development” was conducted, where students expressed strong and thoughtful viewpoints. In addition, speech and drawing competitions were organized on the theme “Beat the Plastic Pollution – Our Planet, Our Responsibility.” Students actively participated and showcased their creativity and awareness. The event successfully promoted environmental consciousness and inspired responsible actions among students.

The Department of Biochemistry at Idhaya College of Arts and Science for Women, Pakkamudayanpet, Puducherry, in collaboration with Aravind Eye Hospital, Thavalakuppam, organized a free Mega Eye Check-Up Camp on 13.11. 2024. at Idhaya Auditorium from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., The camp attracted around 200 people from the Pakkamudayanpet and Tagore Nagar regions, as well as over 100 parents of students with nearly 500 students attended enthusiastically for check-ups.
The camp aimed to promote eye health and raise awareness about the importance of regular eye examinations. For those requiring corrective measures, subsidized eyeglasses were made available at a nominal cost of Rs. 150 to 400, ensuring affordability for those in need.
Through this initiative, the Department of Biochemistry demonstrated its commitment to public health and wellness by making essential eye care services accessible to the local community. The successful collaboration with Aravind Eye Hospital highlights the college's dedication to community service and promoting awareness around vital health issues.

The Department of Biochemistry organized a industrial visit on 04.04.2023 to Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Krishi Vigyan Kendra, pondicherry. Students visited many places and experienced the practice of techniques involved in tissue culture, mushroom culture, soil testing and rice testing laboratory.
A small lecture about the plant cultivation and pest control was given by the professors of KVK and finally visited horticulture and organic plants garden. Students were interested to purchase organic plants.

The Department of Biochemistry conducted a "Intercollegiate Meet-Genesis 2023" on National Science Day, 28.02.2023 at 9.30 am to 1.00 pm.
Chief Guest: Dr. S. Arokiaraj, Principal, Paulson's College of Education, Vanur. We conducted several competitions includes poster presentation, fireless cooking, face painting, just a minute and mime. Nearly 12 other college students were participated in these events. Students from our college and outside colleges won prizes and certificates for the various events in the programme.
