Department Activities
We, the Department of English came into existence with the inception of Idhaya College of Arts and Science in the year 2004, but not as English Literature, but as part of the department of Language with the motto of “Nurturing the Young minds towards the universal development of the universal language – ENGLISH. We acknowledge the importance of students’ capabilities with the symbolic system and that all the students achieve a certain degree of competence and performance in communication skills.
“Literature is the progressive mark of Man’s civilization. It is an art that employs the medium of language. It has deep and lasting human significance”.
In course of time, language department has envisaged its vision and grown in leaps and bounds according to the needs of the society. Today we stand tall as the Department of English with unique vision and mission in molding our students. As literature we started to grow since 2011.
Department of English continues its successful journey as a facilitator of English language since 2004 i.e., for a period of 19 years and in terms of Literature it steps into the milestone of its 13th successful year.
The Department received affiliation in the year 2011 with the intake of 30 students and has grown to 150 students in the present scenario.

| 1 | Year: 2025 - 2026 Event Type: Others Internship Programme for III-Year English Students As part of the academic curriculum, the third-year students of the Department of English successfully completed their internship programme in three reputed institutions — Immaculate School, Jungle Book School, and Jyoti Vallalar School. The internship provided the students with valuable hands-on teaching experience and an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real classroom environments. During this period, the students actively engaged in lesson planning, classroom management, and interactive teaching activities, thereby gaining deeper insights into the teaching-learning process. This practical exposure helped them enhance their communication skills, confidence, and professional competence, preparing them for their future careers in education and related fields. |
| 2 | Year: 2024 - 2025 Event Type: Seminar Webinar on India’s Spiritual Gift to the West: Panel DiscussionThe students of II M.A. English attended a webinar organized by Infinity Foundation India in collaboration with Tagore Government Arts and Science College, Puducherry.The event, titled “India’s Spiritual Gift to the West: Panel Discussion,” was based on the book The Battle for Consciousness Theory — a response to Ken Wilber’s interpretation of Sri Aurobindo’s work and other Indian philosophical traditions.The session was presided over by Dr. Sasi Kanta Dash, Principal, Tagore Government Arts and Science College. Eminent speakers Rajiv Malhotra, Manogna Sastry, and Kundan Singh highlighted the transformative impact of Indian spiritual philosophies on Western approaches to consciousness studies.An interactive session followed, where students actively engaged with the panelists, raising thought-provoking questions on the role and relevance of Indian spirituality in the global intellectual arena.

Two-Day International Seminar on “Mirroring Change: Literature and Social Transformation”The Department of English, Pondicherry University, organized a Two-Day International Seminar on “Mirroring Change: Literature and Social Transformation” on 3rd and 4th October 2024. The students of II M.A. English actively participated in the event. The seminar brought together scholars, researchers, and literary enthusiasts from around the world to discuss the dynamic relationship between literature and social transformation. It served as an engaging platform to explore how literary works reflect societal changes, inspire action, and envision alternative futures. A highlight of the seminar was the lecture by Prof. S. Armstrong, Chairperson, School of English & Foreign Languages, University of Madras. Prof. Armstrong emphasized the transformative power of literature, explaining how literary texts act both as mirrors that reflect reality and as catalysts that inspire social change.

The Department of English organised An Intra College Literary Competition on November 3, 2025 in AV Hall and Auditorium.
The Event comprised five distinct Competitions: Poetry Writing, Spell bee, Turncoat, Reading challenge and Extempore. These multifaceted events were meticulously designed to showcase the talent of the students. It provides a platform for them to exhibit their creativity and linguistic skills. Students from all the departments participated in the event and shower their active participation. To acknowledge their skill, certificates and medals were awarded to the prize winners.

The Department of English organised An Introductory Session on Cambridge Learning Resources for English Proficiency on November 5, 2025 in the Auditorium. Mr. John Vijayakumar IS, Trainer and Quality Designer, English Language Acquisition, was the Chief Guest of the Function.
The Program commenced with a Prayer song followed by a welcome Address delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Vijayamudhan.
Head of the Department Dr. Pilmco Dass Introduced the Chief Guest to the audience.
The Resource Person delivered a speech focusing on Cambridge Learning, English Proficiency, Standardization, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Cambridge Resources, including Interchange Book. The Session concluded with an interactive activity. Students actively participated throughout the program.

On 28th February 2025 , a team of 23 students along with a faculty Ms. Nishadevi Assistant Professor from the English Department participated in JOSLIT 2K25, an intercollegiate literary meet organized by St. Joseph’s College of Arts and Science, Cuddalore. On 3rd March 2025, a two-hour Faux Calligraphy session was conducted for the IBA English students as part of the LSRW Club activities. The session, led by S. Gitanjali from II MA English, introduced students to the art of decorative lettering using regular pens.The session began with an introduction to the basics of calligraphy, followed by a comparison between traditional calligraphy and Faux Calligraphy. Students were also taught essential hand strokes, as well as the techniques for writing alphabets and words in a decorative style.Throughout the session, students actively engaged with the material, and their creativity and handwriting skills were notably enhanced. Many students expressed keen interest in exploring the art of calligraphy further, indicating a strong desire to continue practicing and improving their skills.This session was a great success in fostering both artistic expression and skill development among the students.

She also introduced a range of activities planned for the year, including competitions and workshops.The Chief Guest’s Address emphasised the importance of language proficiency and soft skills for personal and professional success. The event was organized to bid a warm and memorable farewell to the outgoing students who have been an integral part of the college community.
The programme was presided over by Rev. Sr. Dr. A. Fathima, Principal and Secretary of Idhaya College of Arts and Science for Women. The Chief Guest of the day was Dr. D. Lazar, Finance Officer (i/c) and Professor, Department of Commerce, Pondicherry University. The dignitaries were warmly welcomed with floral bouquets and a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony marked the formal inauguration of the event.

Our students visited the place and experienced the practice of agriculture, farming and great change in their attitude after witnessing the Differently abled society.It created an Impact on our students community.All Undergraduates and Postgraduates Students along with their respective incharge faculties witnessed Sristi Village. A small lecture about the foundation was given by the members of Sristi Foundation and finally Students visited their project works.
